This Empty decomposed fuel bladder was located in the All Purpose Grid area. A 55-gallon drum staging area and an apparent burn area located in the All Purpose Grid. 6 tons of debris was also found in this area.
This pad, located at the northwest end of the runway at Michaels Army Airfield, was used to decontaminate aircraft and liquid storage tanks that had been used for agent-simulant testing.
Contaminated wastewater from the pad was washed into collection sumps that fed the liquid via storm drain to this unlined evaporation pond. Locatd west of Granite Peak this concrete pad supported 20 large, open brine vats that were used for evaporation of wastewaters from testing programs.
Located at the western flank of Granite Peak, this site was primarily used for the aboveground storage of range debris. M55 rocket motors and fiberglass shipping containers were in the miscellaneous rubbish found here. Besides debris, M55 warheads, CS submunitions, and 8-inch artillery rounds were present on the site.
This incinerator was used to destroy pathological wastes generated at Baker. Remaining ash residue was sampled and found to contain semi-volatile organic compounds and metals. The incinerator was used to destroy gas chromatography residues, medical wastes, from the Health Clinic, paper, and some laboratory animals. The incinerator has disappeared and it’s present location is unknown. This unit was near the southeastern boundary of the Carr Facility was used for incineration of wastes from Building 3445, and items from 3X storage areas. These wastes consisted of rubber gloves and laboratory clothing, and 3X material originally contained in 5-gallon propellant charge cans, and then placed in plastic bags. The wastes were then incinerated to 5X level and disposed of as hazardous waste. The 220-acre site of the former (1940’s to 1953) biological laboratory and self-supporting facility located at the north end of Granite Peak, consists of numerous trenches and disposal areas, building foundations, and concrete rubble and debris from demolished buildings. The site is SW of Granite Peak but uncertain in location and size. Because the presumed site is located in an active firing range, the explosive risk is considered to be high. Wastes disposed included beryllium and low-level radioactive wastes containing tritium and carbon. The site (active in the 1950’s to 1970’s) is located south of Granite Peak. It's precise location and size is unknown. Because the presumed site is located in an active firing range, the explosive risk is considered to be high. Wastes disposed included beryllium and low level radioactive wastes containing tritium and carbon 14.
An area west of Granite Peak of uncertain size and location, active 1940’s to 1950’s. Reported disposal site of radioactive waste and possible disposal site of German chemical agents (W.W. II).
The 16 acre site is located at the former East Granite Holding Area, had three open trenches and one backfilled trench. The backfilled trench was used for the disposal by burning of beryllium containing missile propellant waste. Materials that have been stored at the area included tritium and carbon 14. 0.38-acre site of an unlined soil mound in theV-Grid area, active 1950’s to 1960’s. Wastes reportedly disposed at the site include construction debris, marston matting, and spent small-caliber shell casings.
Known as the Waste Pile at the North End of Granite Peak, is a landfill located north of Granite Peak, approximately 1,000 ft north of Stark Road.
This site was used to dispose of a variety of solid wastes generated during range cleanup and the demilitarization activities. The unit consists of two trenches that are positioned end to end and are approximately 50 ft apart.
Site of an aboveground concrete tank located near the perimeter of V-Grid in the All Purpose Grid area, active 1940’s to 1950’s. Debris is scattered outside of the vat, including sealed glass vials filled with an unknown liquid. The vat was reportedly used for testing of flares, munitions, and other chemical agent tests. The concrete floor is stained and contains debris including spent shell casings, white crystals or powder and animal bones. 178-acre fenced waste burial area located in the south Tower Grid area, active 1950 to 1977. The site was reportedly used during demilitarization of chemical weapons. There are three trenches, six mounds, a drum storage area, and a concrete pad. SE Tower Grid site of an unlined trench (60 ft by 15 ft), two soil mounds, and metal tower sections, active 1960’s to 1970’s. Reportedly, agent-containing wastes were disposed of in the trench.
NE Tower Grid site of an unlined trench (60 ft by 10 ft), a partially back-filled pit, and two soil mounds, active 1960’s to 1970’s. At the eastern end of the trench there is a partially buried 1,000-gallon tank.
An abandoned landfill site consisting of L-shaped depression and paved access area located near SW Tower Grid, active during the 1950’s. The L-shaped area contains a backfilled trench overlain by a soil mound, and a smaller mound with some scrap metal. Numerous cave-ins are present in the backfilled trench at the southern end of the depression, and a large unvegetated, disturbed area is located on the northern end of the depressed area. The site was reportedly used for classified waste residues.
Located in the All Purpose Grid area with a 450 sq. ft concrete pad, active 1960’s, reportedly used for decontamination of VX contaminated vehicles. The area investigated as the decontamination pad area was actually determined to be the site of a former maintenance shop. The actual decontamination pad area was later located, along with a suspected animal burial site. 8.25-acre site of several unlined trenches and disturbed areas located in the All Purpose Grid area, active 1940’s to 1960’s. The reported use of the site was for disposal of vehicles, vehicle parts, and miscellaneous equipment contaminated with chemical (primarily VX) and biological agents.
Site of a former vehicle decontamination pad located in downwind area, active 1960’s to 1970’s. Only concrete footings remain, the metal pad is no longer present.
A former 55-gallon drum storage area was located near the pad and was reportedly used to store white phosphorus. Scrap ordnance and debris were also scattered across the site. Due to the elevated phosphorus levels found in the pad and drum storage area made the explosive risk for the site very high.
Located at the southern end of the Downwind Grid southeast of Granite Peak, the site consists of a trench with a vehicle access ramp, a soil pile, and a detonation crater. The excavated area was approximately 95 ft long, 40 ft wide, and 12 to 15 ft deep when active, and the pile of excavated soil was approximately 6 to 8 ft high.
This site was used to manage a wide range of solid waste materials, including range-related debris such as tear gas and fog oil canisters, empty decontamination fluid containers, smoke pots, 155-millimeter ordnance fragments, CS bomblets, several types of munitions including M55 rockets, magnesium-filled incendiary rounds and munitions with unknown contents and wooden ammunition cases.
This Empty decomposed fuel bladder was located in the All Purpose Grid area.
