May I defend the Deseret News against the
counterattack of Dr. Spendlove, former Chief of Sciences at Dugway
Proving Ground? (Forum, April 3) His accusation was to the effect that
your paper makes much ado over nothing.
I believe the gist of your "much ado" echoes the grave concerns of
your reading majority, that our government and military hide entirely
too much from us. They make it so obvious time and again that they
think we don't know what's good for us. They don't want government by
the people. We are a bunch of ignoramuses. They want to govern us.
We are now finding out some of the many ways in which we have been
betrayed. Disconcerting facts are coming to light in horrifying
numbers. And this may be only the tip of the iceberg. Many of us now
wonder if we can ever trust our government again.
Judges are giving decisions that grate against the wishes of the
majority, providing more protection for criminals than for their
victims. Minorities are getting their way at the expense of the
majority. Congressmen are still hiding facts from us while boosting
their own salaries and retirement benefits at every turn.
If Dugway scientists are dragged heavily into this, it is simply
because so many betrayals and hoodwinks have taken place there.
Certainly there are times and cases in which some classified info must
be kept from us. But when it comes to exposing us to harmful chemicals
and radiation, the spirit rebels. In such cases, we definitely should
have been forewarned, if nothing more. |
